چکیده

An improved land–ocean global monthly precipitation anomaly reconstruction is developed for the period beginning in 1900. Reconstructions use the available historical data and statistics developed from the modern satellite-sampled period to analyze variations over the historical presatellite period. This paper documents the latest in a series of precipitation reconstructions developed by the authors. Although the reconstruction principle is still theminimization ofmean-squared error, this latest reconstruction includes the following three major improvements over previous reconstructions: (i) an improvedmethod that first produces an annual first guess, which is then adjusted using a monthly increment analysis; (ii) improved use of oceanic observations in the annual first guess using a canonical correlation analysis; and (iii) reinjection of gauge data where those data are available. These improvements allowmore confident analyses and evaluations of global precipitation variations over the reconstruction period. Quantitative error estimates for the reconstruction are being developed and will be documented in a later paper.

Global precipitation trends in 1900–2005 from a reconstruction and coupled model simulations

[1] The trends of global precipitation in 1900–2005 are evaluated using a historical precipitation reconstruction and coupled model simulations, Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 3. A significant increasing trend in the global oceanic precipitation is identified in both the reconstruction and models. The trend from the reconstructed ...

Analyses of Oceanic Total Cloudiness and Some Relationships with Precipitation and SST Beginning 1900

Oceanic cloudiness, precipitation, and sea-surface temperature (SST) are important and related climate fields. Here development of a new historical analysis of total cloudiness over the oceans is described. Some joint evaluation of cloudiness, SST, and precipitation is done to help to give an overall picture of how these variables change and interact on regional to global scales since 1900. Int...

Surface Observed Global Land Precipitation Variations during 1900–88

The authors have analyzed global station data and created a gridded dataset of monthly precipitation for the period of 1900–88. Statistical analyses suggest that discontinuities associated with instrumental errors are large for many high-latitude station records, although they are unlikely to be significant for the majority of the stations. The first leading EOF in global precipitation fields i...

Phenomenological solar signature in 400 years of reconstructed Northern Hemisphere temperature record

[1] We study the solar impact on 400 years of a global surface temperature record since 1600. This period includes the pre-industrial era (roughly 1600–1800 or 1600–1900), when negligible amount of anthropogenic-added climate forcing was present and the sun realistically was the only climate force affecting climate on a secular scale, and the industrial era (roughly since 1800–1900), when anthr...

"Divergence problem" in estimating temperature based on tree rings (Case study: Juniper mountainous habitats in northern Kerman province)

Introduction The study of tree rings is one of the most widely used methods of climate reconstruction for centuries and millennia, but the occurrence of climatic anomalies such as global warming in recent decades has caused divergence problem in the series of tree rings in some areas. Which challenges the ability of this proxy to regenerate the climate. The “divergence problem” is the differen...
